Why We Do Things – Part I

Why We Do Things – PART I

Everything we do in life is for one or a combination of three reasons.

Enjoyment of the Process – Often we do something simply because it is fun to do:

  • Playing cards with friends

  • Going to the movies

  • Reading a trashy novel

  • Having sex for pleasure

Enjoyment of the Outcome – Often we accomplish things that we don’t particularly enjoy doing but we appreciate the result:

  • Cleaning an oven

  • Mowing the lawn

  • Shoveling snow

  • Having sex to have a baby

So someone out there is saying, Hey, but I love mowing the lawn. Fine – to each his own, but for me, there are a thousand things I would rather be doing than tending to the yard.

Enjoyment of the Reward – Often we do things simply for the compensation:

  • Receiving a pay-cheque

  • Having a medal pinned to one’s chest

  • Engraving one’s name on a trophy

  • Having sex because that’s how you earn an income.

Of course, one of the secrets of living a happy life is to have a job that meets all three. I was fortunate in this respect; I loved teaching, I think I made a difference in the lives of many people and I made enough money to help raise a family and own a home. Sadly, there are too many people out there who are not as fortunate. They endure the week so they can enjoy the weekend. That’s a tough way to make a living.
