I was attending a retirement reception for a colleague. A number of former teachers were in attendance.
I was chatting with a retired principal, a woman I hadn’t seen for a while. While we were talking, a younger teacher approached us and asked me if this woman were my wife. I made introductions and explained how this former principal was related to the retiree. The younger teacher talked for a bit and then left.
My friend, the retired principal, turned to me and said, “It should have been obvious that we weren’t married, given how much talking we were doing with each other.”
I figured Henny Youngman would approve of that line.
