A few weeks back I called a company with which I do some business. One of the things that impresses me about this company is that a human answers the phone. Oh, and they provide good customer service too.
After I introduced myself, the fellow on the line said, “Hello, Mr. Caines. How are you today?”
“Do you want the long answer or the short answer?”
“Ah, what’s the difference?”
“Well, I could go on for about two or three minutes detailing how I am doing physically, spiritually and/or emotionally, or I could simply say, Good.”
“Can we go with that last one?”
“Let’s do that. I’m good, and you?”
This reminded me of a story my next older brother tells. He was a high school vice-principal at the time and was standing in the school office. A student had asked the school secretary a question.
Secretary: “Well, the short answer to your question is No.”
Student: “May I ask what the long answer is?”
Secretary: “It’s NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.”
