A Braided Question?
Last week I stopped by the grocery store. When I arrived at the check-out I was standing behind a woman with the most fascinating hair. She would have been in her late 20’s or early 30’s and had the tightest, smallest braids I had ever seen.
The light coming in form the store front windows made it difficult to see her braids with much detail so I moved in a little closer (not within “creepy” distance). It looked to me as if there were no more than 50 hairs per strand and there were hundreds of braids.
When she turned to put her items on the belt I think her peripheral vision told her I was staring. I didn’t want her to feel uncomfortable so I spoke.
“I’m sorry, but I have to ask you about your hair. How long does it take to braid it like that?”
She hesitated then spoke in a thick, Caribbean accent: “Actually …… it’s a week.”
“Really, wow – a week. How many hours per day would that include?”
She hesitated again then said, “No no no no … it’s ….. a …. wig.”
It seems every day I learn something new.
